Castelli Alpha Doppio ROS - Thermal Jacket

With the new generation Alpha Doppio RoS jacket, Castelli has once again improved its best performing jacket to date. Even the best fabrics currently on the market offer high breathability, but can not keep up with the perspiration that can occur during intense cycling.

That's why they opted for a two-layer construction that allows the outer windproof layer to be opened while the insulating layer remains closed, so that moisture inside the jacket can be wicked away by air circulation without coming into direct contact with the skin. On a long climb, you open the outer layer all the way to allow moisture to escape, and as soon as you start your descent, you close the outer layer again to keep everything dry inside. This works so well, you'd think there were magical forces at work here.

For the new generation, Castelli has used a softer and warmer insulation layer made of Polartec® Alpha Direct. Small changes have also been made to the openings: the collar, the hem and especially the cuffs. The collar closes high and is shaped to follow your every movement, whether you're standing or defending your winning position against your friends in the aero position. In the hip area, Castelli has incorporated a stretch layer with silicone reinforcement that lies flat and completely blocks the wind without constricting or riding up.

The two-layer sleeve cuff has been revised and now consists of an inner layer that fits under the glove and fits snugly around the wrist, and an outer layer that pulls over the glove so that rain beads off the outside and doesn't penetrate the glove. To keep the jacket performing well in wet conditions, Castelli used GORE-TEX INFINIUM™ WINDSTOPPER® laminates and waterproofed key seams at the shoulders. Other seams are protected from direct water entry, so the fabric's water-repellent finish is sufficient to largely prevent moisture penetration.

Castelli describes it as "essentially waterproof," subjectively judging it to strike a balance between rain protection, breathability and comfort. While that doesn't mean a drop of rain never penetrates the jacket, test subjects always stayed completely dry during extended rides in pouring rain. All these features make it a favorite of Castelli teams and most of the brand's ambassadors: it's the most versatile functional jacket for cold weather training that Castelli has ever developed.
