A large part of the harmful substances in well water are invisible, odorless and tasteless. The water should be tested in the laboratory every time the well is new, and also old wells every 3 to 5 years. In Finland, Ministry of Social Affairs and Health regulations no. 401/2001 and 1352/2015 define the health and technical-aesthetic maximum concentrations of different pollutants in household water. The origin and effects of each pollutant are described below, the maximum allowed/recommended concentration is also indicated in parentheses.

In terms of water filtration, the essential parameters of water analysis are pH, iron, manganese, potassium permanganate number (humus), electrical conductivity, hardness and bacteria. Chemical compounds harmful to health, such as arsenic and fluoride, should always be analyzed separately.
