Iron oxide black is an opaque and very light-resistant pigment.

Pigments, i.e. color powders, are suitable for tinting and manufacturing paint, decorative and fine-art paintings, such as marbling, etching, patination, and coloring concrete, lime mortar and lime paint. A binder is added to the pigments, which binds the paint and keeps it on the surface to be painted. Pigments can also be used to color plaster, paper and cardboard. The final result of the color depends on the amount of pigment used and the binder used for it.

In tinting oil paints, the principle is the same as in tinting water-based paints, but the pigment is first mixed with either turpentine or boiled linseed oil (varnish). Different pigments react differently; some need more oil to dissolve than others. In general, heavy pigments dissolve in a smaller amount of oil than light dusting pigments.
