The Ecological Rift

Three environmental sociologists make a powerful argument that the source of the planet's current ecological crises is capitalism, which expands individual wealth at the expense of public wealth--including the wealth found in the natural world. Solutions to environmental problems are undermined by the dynamics of a capitalist society, the authors argue, and the only solution to this problem is making the structural changes necessary to move society off of the treadmill of accumulation. Probably a bit rough going for readers without some knowledge of dialectical analysis, this book will reward persistent readers with surprising insights into the origins of--and possible solutions for--the world's current environmental woes.
