Sheepwool serves plants and soil organisms, just as it serves animals and us. It protects, insulates, breathes, retains moisture, and feeds the soil, promoting soil microbial activity and plant growth. Plus, it's rather cute.

The BioProffa weed barrier is particularly suitable for vegetable gardens and raised plant beds. It buffers the scorching sun and prevents weeds from growing, yet fosters excellent growing conditions in the soil by enabling penetration of water and nutrients, as well as ample gas exchange. The mat also prevent erosion: surface roots cling to the wool, and the wool absorbs the intensity of the rain, preventing soil run-off. Worms and microbes thrive under the protection of the wool, whereas snails steer away from coarse wool (as it poses an existential threat to their mucus-heavy lifestyle). And to top it off, the crop stays clean :)

Instructions

Garden Beds:
1.Remove any weeds and unwanted elements.
2. Fluff up the top soil and add soil amendments if necessary (biochar, bokashi, nutrients, microbes, etc.).
3. Spread the barrier in place
4. Use BioProffa mounting hooks or stones (for example) to hold the mat in place
5. Cut incisions or holes with scissors and plant seedlings and/or seeds.
6. Water well

Seedling Pots:
Cut a piece of the wool mat and line the bottom of the seedling tray with a piece of wool. The soil will hold together better at planting time as the roots cling onto the wool at the bottom of the pot. A piece of wool at the bottom of the pot also prevents soil run-off.

Maintenance
Bioproffa wool products are 100% sheep's wool and therefore 100% biodegradable; you can prolong their use by drying them well before storage. Otherwise, sheep's wool will release important nutrients and trace elements (especially nitrogen and sulphur) as it decomposes - whether this is your intention, is up to you :)
