This update of the 2004 and 1995 editions introduces the theory and practice of the now more-widely accepted naturalistic method of qualitative interviewing. A new chapter describes modifications of the responsive (open-ended) interviewing model for conducting interviews with more than one person at a time and with special populations. Emphasizing the importance of cultural, contextual, and personal influences on the communication of meaning, the Rubins (emerita, sociology/public administration, Northern Illinois U.) explain the underlying philosophy, stages, and influence of this approach.
